Mrs. Clark's Chronicles
October 2006

Curriculum

Math- We are currently in unit three of Everyday Math. Students are learning about measurement including: standard customary U.S. measurement (in., ft., & yd.), metric measurement (mm., cm., & m), perimeter, and area. In unit four students will begin learning about multiplication and division.

Social Studies- We are nearly finished learning about the Pilgrims and Wampanoag Indians. Students enjoyed taking part in the Pilgrim Simulation in which they pretended to be actual pilgrims settling in a new world. The challenge was to do better than the Pilgrims did in 1620. The Pilgrim assessment will be on Tuesday November 7. A study guide has been sent home.

Science- Students will begin to learn about the solar system. They will be learning about what causes day and night, constellations, and the phases of the moon. Students will also be researching a planet and conducting a solar system web quest.

Reading- We are currently in the second unit of Harcourt. In this unit students are focusing on the following skills: understanding the author's purpose for writing a selection, word relationships (synonyms, antonyms, & homophones), and decoding long words.

Grammar- Students are learning about the following concepts in unit two of Harcourt: compound sentences, common and proper nouns, singular and plural nouns, and singular possessive nouns.

Writing- Students have been focusing on writing a paragraph with a topic sentence, five detail sentences, and a clincher sentence. We concentrated on writing a descriptive paragraph this past month and will move on to personal narratives next month.
